AUSTRALIAN taxpayers declared a total income of $583.4 billion in 2007-08, an increase of 9.3 per cent on the previous tax year.
The latest Tax Office snapshot released yesterday revealed that total included $431.8 billion in salary and wages, a 14 per cent increase.
But which part of Australia earnt the most?
According to the snapshot, Sydney contributed a swag-load, boasting seven of the nation's wealthiest 10 postcodes.
Topping the list was 2027, the postcode that covers the well-to-do suburbs of Darling Point, Edgecliff and Point Piper in Sydney's east. It boasted a mean taxable income of $186,202.
Among the big-money names calling that postcode home is Westfield's Frank Lowy, who has an estimated worth of $4.2 billion.
The second-richest NSW postcode was across the Harbour at Mosman and Spit Junction (postcode 2088) with a mean taxable income of $156,063, earning it fourth spot nationally.
The next most well-heeled Sydney postcode was 2030, centred on Dover Heights and Vaucluse, the address of businessman James Packer and his estimated $4 billion fortune.
That ritzy postcode had a mean taxable income of $146,996.
In sixth spot nationally was Bellevue Hill (2023) with $142,858 followed by Northbridge (2063) with $141,645.
Woollahra - home to Aussie Home Loans boss John Symond and his estimated $350 million - was in seventh spot nationally with a mean taxable income of $139,573.
Rounding out the national top 10 was the leafy postcodes of Woolwich and Hunters Hill, which Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett calls home.
Yesterday's snapshot also revealed the average cost of using a tax agent rose 12 per cent to just over $300, reinforcing the Government's resolve to scrap annual returns for millions of workers in favour of electronic returns.
